Description
Disorders of the ‘Gut’ or Gastro Intestinal Tract commonly present in the pharmacy setting. In the majority of cases short term conditions can be managed with many over the counter preparations. The starting point is to have an understanding of the anatomy and functions of the GIT and this module will provide the basis for your learning. This Badge, focuses on lower gastrointestinal disorders.
Courses included:
Nausea, Vomiting and Diarrhoea
Nausea, Vomiting and diarrhoea are common ailments that present at pharmacy frequently. In this module we will identify the major causes, the basis for treatment and how we can advise our patients in relation to managing these conditions. This should be viewed with modules on OTC medicines for nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea, Domperidone and dehydration.
Constipation
Constipation occurs when the passage of faeces is less frequent than the person’s normal pattern. The faeces are hard and dry because the passage of food along the intestine is slowed. This means that too much water is absorbed from food in the large intestine, into the blood stream. The passing of faeces may be painful or difficult and this may lead to other problems such as haemorrhoids (piles).
Dehydration
This module focuses specifically on dehydration which is an important medical condition that is associated with many illnesses that present to pharmacy. Dehydration can be a very serious condition and in vulnerable patients, can be life threatening
OTC Products-Domperidone
This module focuses specifically on medicines that contain the active ingredient Domperidone . You should review this module in conjunction with the product information provided on specific medicines that contain Domperidone.
Sales of Domperidone containing medicines are strictly regulated and subject to guidelines from the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.
